Thank you for visiting our blog for Breast Cancer Awareness month. Nearly 250,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women this year alone and rates are increasing by the year. Research has shown promising results when women have higher levels of omega 3 fatty acids and higher levels of vitamin D in their body.

Research has shown that omega-3 fatty acids may lower the risk of breast cancer in postmenopausal obese women. The protection likely comes from the fatty acids’ anti-inflammatory effects, say authors. Omega-3 fats also inhibit a pro-inflammatory enzyme called cyclooxygenase 2 (COX 2), which promotes breast cancer. The breast cancer genes (BRCA1 and BRCA2) became more mainstream when Angelina Jolie under went a double Mastectomy after discovering she had a “faulty” BRCA1 gene, which increased her risk of developing the cancer. Omega-3 fats increase the expression of these two genes, BRCA1 and BRCA2. BRCA1 (breast cancer gene 1) and BRCA2 (breast cancer gene 2) are tumor suppressor genes that, when functioning normally, help repair damage to DNA, thus helping to prevent cancer development.
